A friend sent me an article about how reading has become a chore and it took me 3 tries to finish the article. At that moment I realised I needed a book that would capture me and not feel like another item added to a never-ending to-do list.

A realisation gradually began to dawn on me. Inevitably what takes me out of a reading slump is Japanese fiction. There’s something about the unique sense of place and the gentle observations of life that I find incredibly soothing. In recent years, many of my favourite books are either inspired by or have come out of Japan.

With the days getting shorter and the festive season fast approaching, here are 5 books to reach for if you’re looking for an escape.
