If I told you that I would take away the no. 1 enabler of social mobility in my area for no reason other than a potential kickback you may think I’m unspeakably evil.
Libraries are not just places to read books, they’re social hubs, warm spaces and a rare moment of peace in a world that insists on playing you Ed Sheeran music even in bookshops.
I believe fundamentally that every child deserves a space where they can quietly think and discover what appeals to them.
In the UK this is beginning to be an option only for society’s more affluent children.
My local council is trying to destroy and replace with an inferior alternative the library for the poorest area in the borough — Burnt Oak.

Putting a consultation period over Christmas is a cynical and calculated move when most people are with their families and shockingly not scouring the planning portal of their local government.
