Commentating on the Met while wondering about the catering

It’s the first Monday in May which means some tense people will be striking a pose on the steps of the Met Gala while trying not to think about the fact that putting fashion people in charge of catering may not be the best idea. As per usual, I will be commentating live from my sofa in leggings and my “Give me a second to pretend I care” T-Shirt.

I, of course, feel qualified to commentate from my years of experience aged 2–10 with a dressing up box. Some evergreen style favourites include my Disney Esmeralda costume and a deep red velvet dress with petticoat layers. However, what’s really changed? I loved those clothes because they made me feel pretty and, unlike some stylists I see today, my mother made sure they fit.

If something makes you feel like the best version of yourself, isn’t that enough? A dress went viral because people couldn’t decide whether it was purple or gold. Obviously, people have completely different perceptions of colour, style and what looks beautiful on Zendaya will not necessarily have the same impact when worn by 99% of the female population.
